Navigator Company – Circular Biofertilisers, Bituminous and Cementitious Materials from Kraft Process Residues
The Navigator Company is transforming kraft pulping residues — ashes, biological sludges, lime sludges, grits and dregs — into new value‑added products. These include biofertilisers and soil pH amendment materials obtained from ashes, sludges and grits, as well as bituminous and cementitious products (concrete and mortars) incorporating ashes, grits and dregs. All solutions have reached prototype stage at an industrially relevant scale, demonstrating the feasibility of converting process side-streams into circular bio-based materials.
Potential future developments
Future developments include optimisation of formulations and scaling-up production with industrial partners in agriculture and construction. These materials have potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by substituting carbon‑intensive cementitious products and by enhancing soil productivity with circular nutrients. As Europe increases demand for sustainable materials, these bio-based alternatives can become cost‑competitive solutions that support regional jobs, reduce dependence on imported mineral fertilisers and contribute to EU decarbonisation goals.
Current contribution
This project advances the European bioeconomy by replacing mineral‑based fertilisers and construction materials with bio‑derived alternatives, reducing the environmental footprint of two major industrial sectors. It promotes regional circularity by valorising process residues locally, reducing waste and avoiding significant landfill and transport impacts. As a “Made in Europe” innovation, it strengthens the competitiveness of EU bio-based industries, supports the transition to low‑carbon materials, and encourages more efficient resource use across pulping and construction value chains.
