Navigator Company – Cellulose-based leather-like materials
Navigator is developing new cellulose-derived materials that mimic the texture, durability and aesthetics of animal-based and synthetic leather, in collaboration with AlmaScience CoLab. The programme has delivered promising prototypes, demonstrating the potential of renewable, bio‑based fibres in fashion, upholstery and accessories. Patents are in preparation as formulation and performance optimisation progresses towards scale‑up.
Potential future developments
Future developments include pilot-scale production, improved durability properties and partnerships with European designers and manufacturers. These materials could support EU sustainability targets by reducing resource use, lowering CO₂ emissions associated with traditional leather value chains, and promoting circularity in the fashion and accessories sectors.
Current contribution
This innovation contributes to the EU bioeconomy by providing a renewable, low‑impact alternative to animal leather and synthetic petrochemical materials. Leveraging advanced cellulose chemistry, it supports European leadership in sustainable materials for the textile and lifestyle sectors. It also stimulates high‑value R&D employment and reinforces Europe’s positioning in next‑generation biomaterials.
