MM Board & Paper – MCM® FREEZE – High-performance, moisture resistant recycled cartonboard for cold conditions

MCM® FREEZE was developed by MM Board & Paper, part of the MM Group, one of Europe’s leading producers of cartonboard and paper‑based packaging. The company operates production sites across Europe and focuses on renewable, fibre‑based materials, with a strong emphasis on consumer packaging. Its innovation approach brings together product safety, regulatory compliance and sustainability, with a clear focus on recyclable, bio‑based packaging made in Europe. MCM® FREEZE is produced in MM Board & Paper´s mill MM Gernsbach, Germany.

MCM® FREEZE is a recycled cartonboard specifically developed to provide outstanding moisture protection and maximum packaging stability at low temperatures and during temperature fluctuations. The product is based on MCM®, MM Group’s top‑selling recycled cartonboard in Europe, and builds on this proven grade by adding a dedicated freeze protection. Key applications of MCM® FREEZE are chilled and frozen food as well as fruit and vegetables.

The development of MCM® FREEZE responds to the growing demand for fibre‑based packaging that performs reliably in cold‑chain conditions, driven by increasing consumption of chilled and frozen foods. Moisture resistance is critical to maintaining packaging integrity throughout storage and transport. MCM® FREEZE demonstrates how established recycled cartonboard grades can continue to innovate, offering a more sustainable alternative to plastic‑coated packaging while supporting recyclability and circular material use.

Potential future developments

MCM® FREEZE is well positioned to further enhance the competitiveness of recycled cartonboard in chilled and frozen food packaging, a segment with growing demand driven by convenience trends and expanding cold chains.

As a “Made in Europe” innovation, MCM® FREEZE demonstrates how established recycled fibre products can evolve through advanced technologies to meet stricter performance, regulatory and sustainability expectations. Its future potential lies in scaling high‑performance, circular packaging solutions that support food security, reduce fossil‑based materials and reinforce Europe’s leadership in the forest‑based bioeconomy.

Current contribution

MCM® FREEZE contributes to the EU bioeconomy by advancing high‑performance recycled cartonboard for cold‑chain applications. Based on MCM®, Europe’s top‑selling recycled cartonboard, it adds a dedicated moisture (freeze) resistance that ensures packaging stability at low temperatures and during temperature fluctuations, enabling fibre‑based solutions to replace plastic‑coated alternatives in chilled and frozen food packaging. This supports circular material use and keeps fibres in established recycling streams.

Produced at MM Gernsbach (Germany) – one of Europe’s most efficient recycled cartonboard mills – the innovation strengthens regional value creation, skilled employment and industrial know‑how within the fibre‑based sector.

As a “Made in Europe” innovation, MCM® FREEZE demonstrates how established recycled fibre products continue to innovate through advanced technologies. It reinforces Europe’s leadership in sustainable, fibre‑based packaging, meeting market demand for reliable cold‑chain performance while reducing reliance on fossil‑based materials and supporting the EU bioeconomy.
