MM Board & Paper – FOODBOARD® – Recycled cartonboard with functional barrier, advancing protection against unintended substances

FOODBOARD® was developed by MM Board & Paper, part of the MM Group, one of Europe’s leading producers of cartonboard and paper‑based packaging. The company operates production sites across Europe and focuses on renewable, fibre‑based materials, with a strong emphasis on consumer packaging. Its innovation approach brings together product safety, regulatory compliance and sustainability, with a clear focus on recyclable, bio‑based packaging made in Europe. FOODBOARD® is produced at MM Board & Paper’s Frohnleiten site in Austria.

FOODBOARD® is a high‑quality cartonboard designed to protect dry foods such as cereals, rice and tea from unwanted substances. It uses an integrated barrier within the board structure and does not rely on plastic layers or aluminium. This allows FOODBOARD® to meet high food safety standards while remaining recyclable through established paper and board recycling systems. It is positioned as a sustainable alternative to aluminium foils and plastic‑based packaging for dry food applications.

The development of FOODBOARD® was driven by increasing attention to food safety, stricter regulations and growing consumer expectations for safe and sustainable packaging. By combining food protection, recyclability and renewable raw materials, FOODBOARD® supports circular economy goals with a European‑made solution.

Potential future developments

FOODBOARD® is expected to further evolve as a competitive, future‑proof solution as European food‑contact and packaging regulations become increasingly stringent.

From a societal perspective, FOODBOARD® addresses growing demand for safe, sustainable and transparent food packaging. By enabling plastic‑reduced solutions based on renewable raw materials, it supports decarbonisation, circular economy goals and the reduction of food waste.

Current contribution

FOODBOARD® contributes to the EU bioeconomy by enabling safer, more sustainable food packaging based on renewable, bio‑based raw materials. As a high‑performance cartonboard with an integrated functional barrier, it helps protect food from unintended substances such as mineral oils, supporting food safety while allowing a shift away from fossil‑based and multilayer plastic packaging solutions.

By using responsibly sourced wood and recycled fibres and being fully recyclable within established European paper recycling systems, FOODBOARD® supports efficient resource management and circular material flows. Its helps to reduce unnecessary packaging complexity, thereby contributing to decarbonisation across the value chain.

Economically, FOODBOARD® strengthens Europe’s bio‑based manufacturing sector, safeguarding skilled jobs in pulp and paper production, R&D and advanced packaging technologies. Production and innovation are firmly anchored in Europe, and more particularly in Austria, creating regional value and reinforcing industrial resilience and technological leadership.

As a “Made in Europe” innovation, FOODBOARD® reflects Europe’s high standards in product safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance. It demonstrates how European bio‑based innovation can successfully combine sustainability, consumer protection and economic competitiveness, making a tangible contribution to the EU’s transition towards a climate‑neutral and circular bioeconomy.
