Potential future developments
The scaling-up phase will enable industrial production of eucalyptus Lyocell, reinforcing Europe’s competitiveness in renewable textiles. Future developments include fibre functionalisation (traceability, fire resistance), attracting investments in advanced textiles and creating high-value jobs. As consumers demand sustainable fashion, Altri’s innovation could anchor a European supply chain for bio-based textiles, contributing to strategic autonomy and climate neutrality targets.
Current contribution
Altri’s Lyocell innovation strengthens the EU bioeconomy by transforming sustainably sourced Eucalyptus globulus into dissolving pulp suitable for textile applications. This addresses the global demand for renewable fibres, reducing dependency on synthetic fibres and imported cotton. As a “Made in Europe” innovation, it secures regional employment through collaboration with Portuguese R&D centres (CITEVE, CeNTI) and supports rural economies by valorising local forestry resources. The process has a smaller water and carbon footprint than conventional fibres, aligning with EU decarbonisation and circular economy goals. It positions Europe as a leader in sustainable textile production.
