Potential future developments

Future applications (resins, adhesives, food aromas) could expand market reach and add value, reducing Europe’s dependency on petrochemicals. Scaling production and R&D investment would enhance competitiveness and secure skilled employment in bio-based materials.

Current contribution

Produced as a side-stream at Altri’s Caima mill (55,000 t/year), lignosulfonates offer biodegradable, non-toxic alternatives to cement admixtures, synthetic polymers in agriculture, construction, and ceramics. This substitution supports EU chemical industry decarbonisation and reduces environmental impacts. As a “Made in Europe” bioproduct, it reinforces local supply chains and creates value from renewable resources.
