Case Study
Valmet Technologies Oy

Bio4All

A large Finnish consortium of research organisations and international companies is  developing value chains from forest and agricultural biomass residues into aviation and marine fuels as well as selected chemical products.

Aligned with our vision, Valmet is dedicated to finding ways to maximise the value of resources. We are thrilled to apply our extensive pyrolysis technology and process know-how to the Bio4all project, innovating new ways to harness side streams that might otherwise go untapped. Together with our consortium partners, we aim to discover new economically viable, sustainable, and carbon-neutral, or better yet, carbon-negative products.

Potential future developments

Action to mitigate climate change requires a move away from fossil fuels in transport, energy and chemicals. However, cost-competitive liquefaction and bio-oil upgrading processes and the efficient use of bio-oil and process side streams in a wide range of end products can help to reduce the need for fossil feedstock in chemical industry.

Bio4All will play a pivotal role in the EU’s decarbonisation strategy. By developing low-carbon-footprint pathways from biomass to fuels and chemicals, the project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly. The project will contribute to the energy sector by producing sustainable aviation and marine fuels. Bio4All also continues to integrate advanced technologies and sustainable practices contributing to the European resilience also in the future.

Current contribution

The project joins forces within Valmet’s Veturi ecosystem to unlock new renewable raw materials for producing renewable fuels and sustainable feedstocks for polymers and chemicals, such as lignocellulosic waste and residues. Collaboration plays a key role in driving forward scientific breakthroughs, which are crucial for reaching global climate targets

Bio4All is aiming to create green jobs and stimulate economic growth by supporting bio-based industries in the ecosystem. This includes developing new markets for bio-based products and enhancing the competitiveness of European businesses.

Bio4All exemplifies European innovation by integrating advanced technologies and sustainable practices. It showcases Europe’s leadership in the bioeconomy, driving global standards for sustainability and circularity and in this way enhancing the opportunities for “Made in Europe”.
